Texas Tax Free Weekend 2014 is August 8th – 10th!!!The State of Texas officially calls it a Sales Tax Holiday and has scheduled it for this weekend, August 8th thru 10th. All weekend the State will exempt most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save you about $8.25 on every $100 you spend!
Here are some Texas Tax Free Weekend Shopping Tips…
1) Shop with a list. Because self-control is hard and it’s easy to get caught up in the moment. The kids walk up with piles of “wants” in their arms ready to throw them in the basket but you’ll be most time- and cost-efficient if you just stick to the list. If you’re going to use a shopping list and need to know what items qualify for the for the sales tax exemption this weekend… Click the links for the complete lists:

2) Buy in bulk.Since you’re saving about $8.25 on every $100 spent, it’s the best time of the year, besides maybe Black Friday, to buy what you are going to need anyway. For example… if you look at the list of exempt items, you’ll find that diapers are tax-exempt. If you have babies and a diaper budget that will support buying in bulk, you can save a significant amount of money by buying them now. Just remember babies grow… make sure to take that into account when buying for future use!!!
3) Go early. You’ve heard it all of your life, “The early bird gets the worm!” It works the same way with sales. Retailers are going to be offering special deals in accordance with the tax-free weekend but you might miss out if you wait until later in the day, or later into the weekend, to stroll into the Targets, or the Walmarts, or the shopping malls. I’m not saying that you need to camp out the night before but this is a very heavy shopping weekend and if you want to come home with the treasures on your list, the best selection will be available early in the weekend. If you get there too late and the store is sold out of an item that you want… ask for the rain-check! See below for the fine print about rain-checks.
Retailers are not required to collect state and local sales or use tax on most footwear and clothing that are sold for less than $100 during the holiday. Exemption certificates are not required. The exemption applies to each eligible item that sells for less than $100, regardless of how many items are sold on the same invoice to a customer. For example, if a customer purchases two shirts for $80 each, then both items qualify for the exemption, even though the customer’s total purchase price ($160) exceeds $99.99.
The exemption does not apply to the first $99.99 of an otherwise eligible item that sells for more than $99.99. For example, if a customer purchases a pair of pants that costs $110, then sales tax is due on the entire $110.
The exemption also does not apply to sales of special clothing or footwear that the manufacturer primarily designed for athletic activity or protective use and that is not normally worn except when used for the athletic activity or protective use for which the manufacturer designed the article. For example, golf cleats and football pads are primarily designed for athletic activity or protective use and are not normally worn except for those purposes; they do not qualify for the exemption. Tennis shoes, jogging suits and swimsuits, however, are commonly worn for purposes other than athletic activity and thus qualify for the exemption.
The sales tax holiday exemption does not extend to rental of clothing or footwear; nor does it apply to alteration (including embroidery) or cleaning services performed on clothes and shoes. Additionally, tax is due on sales of accessories, including jewelry, handbags, purses, briefcases, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, watches and similar items.
Backpacks priced under $100 sold for use by elementary and secondary students are exempt during the sales tax holiday. A backpack is a pack with straps one wears on the back. The exemption includes backpacks with wheels, provided they can also be worn on the back like a traditional backpack, and messenger bags.
The exemption does not include items that are reasonably defined as luggage, briefcases, athletic/duffel/gym bags, computer bags, purses or framed backpacks. Ten or fewer backpacks can be purchased tax-free at one time without providing an exemption certificate to the seller.
Texas families also get a sales tax break on most school supplies priced at less than $100 purchased for use by a student in an elementary or secondary school.
Persons buying qualifying school supplies during the holiday are not required to provide an exemption certificate – with one exception. If the purchaser is buying the items under a business account, the retailer must obtain an exemption certificate from the purchaser certifying that the items are purchased for use by an elementary or secondary school student. “Under a business account” means the purchaser is using a business credit card or business check rather than a personal credit card or personal check; being billed under a business account maintained at the retailer; or is using a business membership at a retailer that is membership based.
A sale of a qualifying item under a layaway plan qualifies for exemption if the customer places the qualifying merchandise on layaway during the holiday or makes the final payment during the holiday. See Rule 3.365(i).
Eligible items that customers purchase during the holiday with use of a rain-check qualify for the exemption regardless of when the rain-check was issued. However, issuance of a rain-check by a seller during the holiday period will not qualify an eligible item for the exemption if the item is actually purchased after the holiday is over even if the rain-check is presented at the time of purchase. See Rule 3.365(j).

The Woodbridge Homeowners Association Board of Directors met on July 24, 2014 at 7:00 pm at the Woodbridge Golf Club. As a neighborhood Rep for the Meadows I attended and took these notes. These are not the official minutes just personal notes that I wanted to pass along to any of the Woodbridge Residents that were not able to attend the meeting.
Social Committee –The social committee has been very active recently with the Fishing Tournament and the Teen Luau at the pool. The Fishing Tournament & Teen Luau were well attended but more adult assistance is needed to improve these kid friendly events. Please consider playing a role on the social committee even if it is just helping out at the events.
Canyon Crest Pool –Construction of the Canyon Crest pool has started. From the sounds of the construction schedule it may be opened for the end of this year’s swim season but I’ve watched that project long enough to plan on using it when the swim season opens next year.
WalMart is open – They have hired 320 employees and are looking for about 40 more.
Woodbridge Parkway should be open from 78 to 544 by November. They will work on the road in front of Cooper Jr. High and Draper Intermediate first so that the road is complete before school starts and then work their way to the connection at Cody Ln.
The Mansions at Woodbridge –The Mansions at Woodbridge are scheduled to move their first tenants in next week. When completed there will be 381 units. If you would like to see a digital brochure of the apartments or take a virtual tour Click Here.
All of the dirt movement near hwy 78 is not a specific development project. There was fill dirt available from the Woodbridge Parkway bridge construction and it was moved to that location for later use when that area is developed.
Pet Waste Stations –There was discussion on the pet waste stations for the trails. Discussion was had about the installation of pet waste stations at all 34 entrances to the trails or limiting the installation to 18 strategically placed pet waste stations. This will include installation of the stations as well as service and maintenance of the stations. It was decided that 18 pet waste stations would be a good starting place and if additional stations were needed they would be added at a later date.
The 82nd Texas Legislature enacted HB 362:
The bill prohibits a HOA from including or enforcing a provision in its dedicatory instruments that prohibits or restricts a homeowner from installing a solar energy device (definition here). Tex. Prop. Code 202.010(b) (pending effective date and review of governor). Source
There are MANY exceptions that allow a HOA to prohibit the use solar devices. Click Here for more about the exceptions. The one that is being used in Woodbridge is:
In the case of developments or subdivisions that are still under the builder’s control and the HOA has not yet transferred to the property owners, the builder can prohibit or restrict a homeowner for installing a solar energy device. Source
Simply put… There is no need to go pricing any Photovoltaic or solar water heating units any time soon.
Trash and Recycle Container Amendment –(This one will affect virtually everyone in Woodbridge.)
A new Trash and Recycle Container Amendment was added to the HOA design guidelines. Basically if you have a front entry garage, your trash cans cannot be visible from the street unless it’s your trash day. They can be placed at the street for trash collection at 8:00 pm on the day prior to your trash pickup day and must be removed by the end of the day on your trash pick up day.
If you have a rear entry garage, you can store your trash cans adjacent to the garage or anywhere along your driveway, outside of the alley right of way. (If you are looking down the alley, you shouldn’t see any trash cans past the fence lines.)

Rock Pool –There was discussion about replacing the rusted railing at the rock pool and repairing or replacing the gate at the rock pool. The railing replacement was approved but the discussion about the gate replacement led to a request for the management company to get further bids on the gate to ensure that it would be substantial enough to withstand the heavy use that it gets.
Drought Resistant Plants –The idea of planting drought resistant landscaping where the seasonal color is usually planted was presented to the board. The board was not interested in “desert looking plants.” This request came from homeowners. If homeowners would like for this to happen it will take some more research and input before the board will entertain this expenditure.
The board is currently working on a complete rewrite of the governing documents because the HOA Board of Directors is due to turn from a developer controlled board to a homeowner controlled board within two years. Part of this process is developing a policy on how to develop committees and implementing a mechanism to establish a homeowner architectural committee to approve property modifications.

A lack of self-awareness combined with an overactive ego can trip up even the best executive.
When leaders get caught up in their ego, they erode their effectiveness because the combination of false pride and self-doubt created by an overactive ego gives them a distorted image of their own importance. When that happens, leaders see themselves as the center of the universe and they put their own agenda, safety, status and gratification ahead of those affected by their thoughts and actions.
An out-of-balance ego doesn’t feel dramatically different from an in-balance ego. Many leaders may not even notice it at first — though other people will — because ego takes a leader’s strength and subtly changes it into a close counterfeit. An overactive ego puts a self-serving spin on things people originally appreciated about the leader. A leader who is confident becomes arrogant, one with charisma becomes melodramatic, one who is pioneering becomes obsessive, and one who is persistent becomes delusional.
From Fear to False Pride
Leaders with an overactive ego find themselves unable to center. Instead they are constantly moving from a sense of inadequacy to an overinflated sense of their own importance. In his book “Ego Check,” Mathew Hayward identifies two sources of excessive pride.
First, leaders tie their sense of self-worth to extrinsic motivators such as impressing others and gaining power vs. intrinsic motivators such as merit and actual processes.
Second, leaders base their sense of self on interpretations of data that reinforce their opinions, ideas and suggested courses of action instead of taking an objective look at things.
Hayward wrote that while it is important for leaders to understand and be concerned with how others perceive them, it can be taken too far if it gives others control over the leader’s sense of self. Combine that with a lack of accurate and objective information and, over time, a leader can become inauthentic, rudderless and self-destructive.
In his book “Leading at a Higher Level,” business author Ken Blanchard explains that when leaders’ sense of self-worth is tied up in their achievements and the perceptions of others, their self-worth is up for grabs on a daily basis. (Editor’s note: This article’s author works for Blanchard’s company).
Then it becomes increasingly difficult for a leader to maintain a healthy and centered self-determined image. Since performance varies from day to day, leaders shift back and forth between feelings of fear and anxiety, or hubris and false pride.
“When leaders are addicted to either ego affliction, it erodes their effectiveness,” Blanchard said. “Leaders dominated by false pride are often called ‘controllers.’ Even when they don’t know what they are doing, they have a high need for power and control. Even when it’s clear to everyone that they are wrong, they keep on insisting they are right.”
At the other end of the spectrum are the fear-driven leaders. Blanchard said these individuals are often characterized as “do-nothing bosses.” They’re described as “never around, always avoiding conflict and not very helpful.” “Their fear of making a mistake and feelings of inadequacy keep them from taking action — even when they should,” he said.
Four Warning Signs
In their book “Egonomics,” authors David Marcum and Steven Smith identify four warning signs that an overactive ego might be undermining an executive’s career.
Because ego acts subtly and a healthy ego is necessary for anyone who aspires to leadership, the goal is not to remove ego from the equation, but to keep it in balance. Marcum and Smith recommend that leaders develop their humility, curiosity and veracity. The goal is to achieve and maintain an intelligent self-respect and genuine confidence. Marcum and Smith’s advice is echoed throughout the published research on ego and leader effectiveness. Here are some of the key practices for leaders looking to maintain their effectiveness.
Focus on something bigger than yourself. In his book “Good to Great,” Jim Collins identifies a special type of leader who builds enduring greatness through a combination of personal humility and professional will. Collins describes this type of leader as a Level 5. Of special note to all leaders is the underlying principle that Collins sets forward — that leaders at all levels need to put organizational, department or team goals ahead of their personal agenda. In addition to humility and fierce resolve, leaders should focus on the pursuit of a clear and compelling vision; stimulating the group to high performance standards; organizing people and resources toward the pursuit of predetermined objectives; contributing to the achievement of group objectives; working effectively with others in a group setting; and making contributions through talent, knowledge, skills and good work habits.
Build authentic pride. Hayward said for many leaders authentic pride comes from doing good work well. But, when a leader’s pride is dependent on extrinsic rewards or the approval of others, it can easily become overweening pride and a fast-track toward hubris and an ego problem. His recommendations? One, be understated about sharing successes with colleagues. Two, ensure decisions are motivated by business rather than personal objectives. Three, examine the authenticity of decisions and behaviors. Four, avoid spending excessive time on impression management rather than getting on with the job.
Ask questions and seek out feedback. Hayward said leaders often kid themselves about situations because they fail to see, seek, share and use full and balanced feedback to gain a more grounded assessment. Leaders need accurate, pertinent, timely and clear feedback, whether positive or negative, to ground their knowledge about what’s going on around them.
Collins said one of the telltale signs a team is on the way down is if it has leaders who have a very low questions-to-statement ratio, avoiding critical input or allowing sloppy reasoning and unsupported opinions.
Hayward recommends that before leaders make any big decision, they ask themselves three questions: “Am I getting the right input into this decision? Do I have someone who I can trust to tell me when I’m wrong? Am I the best person to be making this call?”
Practice shining the spotlight on others. Blanchard has often said that ego stands for “edging good out.” Leaders need to avoid having an overactive ego limit their effectiveness. Keep things in perspective for best results. “People with humility don’t think less of themselves; they just think about themselves less,” he said. “You finally become an adult when you realize that life is about what you give rather than what you get.”
Collins tells a story in “Good to Great” that illustrates this difference. When things are going well for self-serving leaders, they look in the mirror, beat their chests and tell themselves how good they are. When things go wrong, they look out the window and blame everyone else.
On the other hand, when things go well for leaders focused on showcasing others’ brilliance, they look out the window and give everybody else the credit. When things go wrong, these servant leaders look in the mirror and ask questions like, “What could I have done differently that would have allowed these people to be as great as they could be?”
“At senior levels, it’s easy to blame others: ‘The organization doesn’t get it, the team didn’t execute,’ or even, ‘The economy didn’t behave.’ Excessive pride prevents leaders from seeing what they’re doing wrong so they end up compounding their mistakes,” Hayward said.
Abraham Lincoln once noted that, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.”
Leadership is a high calling. It requires a high level of confidence, skill and ability to influence the actions of others. Ego plays a positive role in this as long as it is channeled in a way that is centered, inspiring and inclusive.
With a little bit of vigilance and an understanding of the four overactive ego warning signs, leaders can head off trouble before it erodes their effectiveness. Leaders with an accurate perception of self, who remain open to feedback and who maintain a commitment to something larger than their personal self interests can help others do the same.

Foundation movement has caused problems for North Texas home owners since the introduction of slab-on-grade foundations in the 1940’s. The engineering of these foundations was improved with the addition of interior grade beams and post-tensioned cables. These enhancements have lead to the current industry standard Post Tensioned Slab. Even with this improved engineering, the expansive soils that are found in North Central Texas can cause foundation problems for home owners if their foundation is not properly maintained. People moving from other parts of the country have never even heard of the concept but… Watering Your Foundation ~ It’s A Texas Thing!!!When expansive soils absorb water they swell exponentially and when they dry out they shrink back exponentially to their dehydrated state. It is important to understand the factors contributing to foundation movement in order to maintain your home and minimize future damage. Expansive soils are a lot like the sponge in this video…
Now imagine your house sitting on that sponge. A clay type soil will increase in volume both horizontally and vertically when it’s moisture content increases. The same soil will shrink in all directions when the moisture content decreases and the soil dries. While there are variations in the expansiveness of clay soils, most clay soils in North Central Texas are of the type that have a moderate to high expansion rate. If the soil under your house isn’t evenly hydrated the foundation will not have a flat surface to rest on causing it to crack and jeopardize the integrity of your entire home.
Typically, it is difficult for all areas of a foundation to be at a constant moisture content because the foundation itself provides a shelter from weather conditions that effect the soil underneath it. The moisture change at the perimeter of the house, however, is more rapid due to it’s exposure to the drying and wetting effects of rainfall and evaporation. As the soil under your home shrinks and swells, the post tensioned slab it sits on is designed to float up and down without failing. As long as the movement doesn’t damage the house, it’s not a problem.
Plumbing problems under the foundation can also be disastrous. The water from broken or leaking water lines, leakage from a swimming pool or a broken sprinkler system can also lead to soil being hydrated unevenly and causing the soil on one side of the home to swell and unevenly lift the house. Left unattended, these maintenance issues lead to foundation problems that compound and manifest themselves in doors and windows that will not open, cracks in tile and other flooring or cracks in drywall at corners, windows and doorways.
That’s right… Water Your Foundation!
You have a couple of options:
The least expensive is to purchase a battery powered timer, a couple of hose splitters, and soaker hoses. Here is a video about how to do this DIY project…
I went this route for the last couple of years and found you get what you pay for…
I needed more than 50′ of hose to get around the house so I bought more hose and added on. Even though the ground was relatively level, the majority of the water came out near the timer just like he said in the video and I didn’t get good results at the far end of the 100′ length of hose.
The soaker hose was also in the way when I mowed. Seems pretty simple… just push it up against the house when you mow and pull it back out away from the house when you’re done. That worked for about the first couple of times and then I just started mowing over it… Until I cut it into shreds. I bought a new soaker hose… from then on the soaker hose stayed up against the house… Exactly where it is NOT supposed to be. Even with the hose next to the house the weed-eater cut it. This was easier to fix with a hose coupler but it took two trips to the store because soaker hoses are a smaller diameter than a regular hose.
Today I had Felix Brito with #1 Ave Irrigation and Fence Co install an underground foundation drip irrigation system. When we called Felix for an estimate he answered his phone and immediately set up an appointment to come by. He is very easy to talk to and communicates well with his clients. The forecast for the day we had scheduled for him to install the system called for rain and we weren’t left guessing. Felix called the afternoon before our scheduled date to reschedule. He arrived to install the system on time with a very polite and hard working crew. He provided a detailed Scope of Work letter to ensure that the work he had planned was exactly what we were expecting and he had a simple clearly written contract for both of us to sign.
This underground foundation drip irrigation system uses Rainbird “Coppershield” drip tubing with emitters every 12″ that put out 0.6 gallons per hour (GPH). Felix placed the tubing all the way around the house 8″ away from the foundation and about 4″ deep into the soil. He also installed a new sprinkler valve, filter and pressure regulator and connected it to the controller for the rest of the sprinkler system.
I highly recommend calling Felix Brito and letting him give you an estimate for a foundation drip irrigation system. I haven’t personally seen his concrete or fence work but when I need some done I’ll certainly give him a call!
I checked the Wylie, Sachse and Murphy restrictions and all of them have the exact same statement that comes from a North Texas Municipal Water District news release that states:
Foundations, new landscaping, new plantings (first year) of shrubs, and trees may be watered for up to 2 hours on any day by a hand-held hose, a soaker hose, or a dedicated zone using a drip irrigation system. Customers should check with their city for specific regulations.
It is, of course, necessary to water more during hot, dry weather and less during cold, damp weather. The amount of water required to keep a foundation stable during the drought can be surprisingly large because trees, shrubs and other plants also remove large quantities of water. During persistent hot dry weather, it may be necessary to water a foundation daily. Your foundation watering program should supply enough water to keep the moisture content in the soil under the foundation of your home at a consistent level.

Our neighborhood is great for being outside. We have 5 swimming pools, multiple playgrounds, ponds for fishing or duck watching, the 18-hole championship Woodbridge Golf Course and great trails for bike riding and walking. Even when we are at home we love that there is nothing behind the house but a big open field. There is always a nice breeze in the backyard. We love to sit on the back patio watching the sunset and sunrise… Without any obstructions we get a great view!
Our children attend Cox Elementary and we really love everything about it. The schools really help maintain the small town feel we get by living in Wylie. The schools also do a great job of communicating with parents. The teachers and staff make a point of knowing who you are, who your child is and they engage in conversations with you. They also do a great job of making school fun along with educational. There are so many activities for the kids to do throughout the school year, they actually enjoy going to school.
The thing we love most about Wylie is the small town feel. We love to spend time in the quaint downtown Wylie area. They have a great variety of little restaurants to enjoy, a park to play in that the kids love, nice sidewalks to take a stroll on, a nice little coffee shop and other small shops too. When you are in our little city you have the closeness and quietness of the small town but you are close enough to Dallas and other surrounding larger cities that you do not feel like you are in the middle of nowhere.
The Wylie area is wonderful. We have everything you need right here. However, if you want to wander out and about we are close to Firewheel Town Center, Collin Creek Mall in Plano, and Dallas itself. We are near Lake Ray Hubbard which has boat rentals and restaurants on the lake.
